Daikin Perfera

The Perfera is about as good as a single-room split gets, with an A+++ SEER/SCOP rating and a 19 dB(A) whisper mode. As an air-to-air heat pump it delivers strong low-cost heat down to well below freezing, making it a credible primary heat source for a room, not just a summer cooler. You pay a premium, but built-in Onecta Wi-Fi, the Flash Streamer purifier and occupancy sensing justify it.

Toshiba Seiya

The Seiya is Toshiba's budget wall unit and the cheapest way into a quality Japanese-engineered split. Despite the entry-level billing its SCOP of 4.6 is respectable, so it works well as an affordable air-to-air heat pump for a single room. You trade away built-in Wi-Fi (an optional adapter is needed) and top-end cooling efficiency, but for the money it is hard to fault.
