Enphase IQ8MC Microinverter

B4.3 IQ8MC-72-M-INT

A per-module microinverter, not a central inverter: the 0.33kW figure is one unit's maximum AC output, and a system is built by fitting one behind each panel.

Our verdict

Different in kind from everything else in this category. Each IQ8MC sits behind one panel and puts out a maximum of 330W of AC on its own, so the catalogue's 0.33kW is a per-unit figure, and a real installation is a string of them. That buys per-module MPPT (shading on one panel does not drag the rest down), low-voltage DC on the roof, and rapid shutdown. The datasheet's 1.43A maximum output current means G98 headroom is a question of how many units you fit, not of one unit: Enphase's own limit is 11 units on a 16A single-phase circuit. Maximum efficiency is 97.5%, warranty up to 25 years provided an internet-connected IQ Gateway is installed.

Good

  • Per-module MPPT, so one shaded panel does not pull down the array
  • Up to 25-year warranty (requires an internet-connected IQ Gateway)
  • IP67 and 1.1kg per unit
  • Rapid shutdown and low-voltage DC on the roof

Watch out

  • 330W maximum AC output per unit, so a system needs one per panel
  • Requires an IQ Gateway and IQ Cabling, bought separately
  • No battery port; Enphase storage is a separate AC-coupled product
  • The 25-year warranty is conditional on keeping the gateway online
