Registering plug-in solar with National Grid Electricity Distribution

National Grid Electricity Distribution (NGED) runs the electricity network in The Midlands, South West England and South Wales. If you've plugged in a balcony solar kit there, registering it takes a couple of minutes online: it's free, and you don't need NGED's permission.

Step by step

  1. Check your kit is on the ENA register. It must be listed Compliant on the ENA Type Test Register ↗ , with a factory-fitted UK plug and no battery. Kits that don't qualify can't be self-installed.
  2. Gather your details: your MPAN (13-digit supply number on any electricity bill), the kit make and model and the date you plugged in.
  3. Register at myplugin.solar ↗ and the national portal routes it to NGED for you. Do this within 28 days of plugging in.
  4. Keep the reference number. You may need it if you move, change the system or switch to an export tariff later.

Not a plug-in kit?

Hardwired systems, anything with a battery, and larger arrays fall outside the plug-in rules. They're notified to NGED under G98 (or G99), normally by your installer. Route: Online form (~10 minutes, instant acknowledgement). NGED's G98 page ↗

Formerly Western Power Distribution, so older kit paperwork may still say WPD.

G98 process last checked 2026-07-02. If NGED has changed its forms, its website is authoritative.
